Buying a Used CVT in Jamaica: What to Check First

Know the symptom before you buy anything

Different symptoms point at different costs. A shudder under light acceleration is usually belt slip. Not engaging drive on a cold morning while reverse works fine is a pressure problem. A whine that rises with road speed is bearings. Losing drive completely after a long hot climb is heat damage, and that is the expensive one.

• No drive when cold, reverse fine — pressure, often fluid related
• Whine that follows road speed — internal bearings
• Total loss of drive after a hot run — heat damage, usually terminal

Fluid first, always

CVT fluid is not optional maintenance and it is not interchangeable. The wrong fluid will destroy a healthy gearbox, and old fluid will kill one slowly. If the car has never had a fluid service, that conversation comes before the gearbox conversation.

If you do need a unit

Match it to your exact car. Same model is not enough — engine, trim and year all matter, and a box from a different variant may bolt in and still not behave. Send us your chassis number and we will match it properly. Ask what is known about the donor vehicle, and fit new fluid and a filter at the same time.

The part nobody thinks about

If the car overheated its gearbox on a hill, the cooling is part of the repair, not an afterthought. Fitting a good used box to a car that cooked the last one just buys you a few months.
