Buying a Used Engine in Jamaica: The Questions to Ask

Match the engine code, not the model name

A Civic did not come with one engine. Neither did a Fit, a Corolla or a Mark X. The code stamped on the block is what matters — D15B, D17A, 1NZ-FE, HR12DE, 4GR-FSE. Two cars of the same year and model can take completely different engines, and a code that is one letter out can mean different mounts, different ancillaries and different management.

Ask what is known about it

Every used engine came out of something. Ask what, why, and whether it ran when it was removed. An engine pulled from a car that was hit in the rear is a very different proposition from one pulled from a car that overheated. Nobody can promise you a used engine will last ten years, but they can tell you where it came from.

The serial number question

Many engines here are sold as one specific physical unit, identified by the serial on the block. That is normal and it is honest — it means what you are being offered is that engine, not "an engine like it". It also means when it is gone, it is gone.

Budget for the parts around it

The engine is not the whole job. Mounts, belts, hoses, a water pump, a thermostat and fluids are all cheaper to do while the engine is out than three months later. Ask for those at the same time and it will cost you far less than doing it twice.
