Nissan Note E12: Which Engine Do You Have, and Why It Matters
The Nissan Note E12 is everywhere in Jamaica now, and it is the one car where people most often order the wrong part. The reason is simple: two cars that look identical from the outside can have completely different engines underneath. Send us your chassis number and we settle it in a minute.
HR12DE or HR12DDR — that is the first question
The plain HR12DE is a normally aspirated 1.2. The HR12DDR is the DIG-S — direct injection, and supercharged. Same badge on the back for most buyers, completely different engine bay. The DIG-S has a supercharger, an intercooler and its own pump, direct injectors and a high pressure fuel pump. None of that exists on the plain car.

- Supercharger, bypass valve, intercooler and intercooler pump are DIG-S only
- Injectors and the high pressure fuel pump are not shared between them
The CVT is the part everyone asks about
The Note uses a CVT, and it gives a warning before it fails. The classic first sign is a shudder under light acceleration at town speed — roughly thirty to forty five kilometres an hour, when you are barely touching the throttle. That is the belt starting to slip on the pulleys.

How do I know if my Note is a DIG-S?
Open the bonnet and look for a supercharger and an intercooler. If they are there it is the HR12DDR DIG-S. If the engine bay is plain, it is the HR12DE. Your chassis number confirms it for certain — send it to us.
Will a DIG-S engine fit my normal Note?
Not as a straight swap. The DIG-S has different fuelling, different ancillaries and different management. Tell us which engine you actually have before ordering anything.
My Note shudders when I accelerate gently. What is it?
That is the classic early sign of CVT belt slip, usually felt around thirty to forty five kilometres an hour under light throttle. Get it looked at before you load the car and take a long hill.
