What to Send Us So We Get It Right First Time

Most wrong parts are not sold dishonestly. They are sold because the shop was given a model name and a guess. Here is the information that removes the guessing, and none of it takes more than two minutes to gather.

1. Your chassis number

This is the single most useful thing you can send. It identifies the exact year, engine, trim and specification of your car — far more precisely than the model name. On Japanese vehicles it is usually on a plate or sticker in the driver’s door jamb, or stamped on the firewall in the engine bay.

2. A photo of the old part

A photo settles arguments that words cannot. Connectors, mounting points, the number of pins, the shape of a bracket — all of it is obvious in a picture and ambiguous in a description. If the part has a number printed or stamped on it, photograph that too.

  • Photograph the whole part, then the connector or mounting
  • Include any part number stamped or printed on it
  • A photo of the fitted position also helps

3. What the car is actually doing

Tell us the symptom, not just the part you think you need. Plenty of times somebody asks for an alternator when the problem is a battery terminal, or a gearbox when it is a sensor. We would rather sell you the right cheap part than the wrong expensive one.

4. Automatic or manual, and the engine

For anything on the drivetrain, this decides it. Auto and manual cars differ in far more than the gearbox — mounts, driveshafts, coolers and sometimes the subframe. And the engine code matters more than the model name for anything that bolts to the engine.

  • Auto or manual
  • Engine code if you have it
  • Whether the car is a hybrid
  • Trim level for body and interior parts

Frequently asked

Where do I find my chassis number?

Usually on a plate or sticker in the driver’s door jamb, or stamped on the firewall in the engine bay. Send us a photo of it and we will read it.

What if I do not know what the part is called?

Send a photo. We deal with parts all day and can almost always identify one from a picture, even a bad one.

Can you tell me what is wrong with my car?

We are a parts shop, not a garage, so we will not diagnose it for you. But tell us the symptom and we will tell you honestly whether the part you are asking for is likely to be the answer.
